“Fifteen” - Goldroom (ft. Chela)

Superdanceable electropop track from Josh Legg AKA Goldroom, with précieuse vocals by Chela to really complement the synthy goodness. Usually I can’t naturally geolocate music, but this was the rare exception, as to me it sounded very similar to what I feel when I think and remember California to be like. As sure as the sunset, you can bet tonight I will be wriggling, swaying, bopping to this.

“The Operator” - Barbara Morgenstern

Video by Kolja Kunt Upon seeing this amazetits video for The Operator, I became paranoid that somebody is videoscreengrabbing/hacking into my computer and recording what I do on illustrator and photoshop when it’s late and I am amusing myself. I’m still not convinced to the contrary. Digital paper dolls, ‘nuf sed. Thanks to Adam for tweeting this to me at this hour! Via http://capyrancher.tumblr.com

Gospel/Grace - Frankie Rose

This past month Frankie Rose’s triumphant post-wave sonic dreaminess, in the form of “Interstellar”, has been dancing about in my head. The entrancing disarming vocals layered upon the gossamer reflection of glossy distortion, entwined with lucid melodies harkening the Martin Hammett production sound, is nothing short of my cuppa tea. What can I say other than this?: I get it. And you will too, my friend…

“Runaway” - Mr. Little Jeans
Dir: Zach Shields
Before actually listening to her smooth cover of “The Suburbs” by Arcade Fire, I already knew I would like Mr. Little Jeans, aka Monica Birkenes. Anything named after a Kumar Pallana role in one of my favorite films automatically has my respect. That’s all it takes to earn it, people!
Although on paper she may have a lot in common with other cool synthpop girl outfits we are fortunate to have in our midst at the moment, Birkenes has an idiosyncratic allure, vocally and musically, indicating there is more beyond the surface.
The visuals of this video for this single off her upcoming album only reinforce said allure. If you have ever been unlucky enough to hear about my obscure absurd dreams, you will know that the short film unfolding before you above this is a tamer but nearly accurate representation of what goes on in one of them. You open your mouth to yell and nothing comes out. Still, the silent scream shatters the glass like a bullet. You open your eyes to find you are still in the darkness.

Futuristic Car Sound Design: “Audi e-tron e-sound”

When a car doesn’t make a sound, you have to create it. Rudolf Halbmeir kills it, and makes the Audi e-tron sound like something out of Blade Runner. This is too cool.

“Ekki Múkk” - Sigur Rós

If this is to be taken as an indicator of what is to be expected from the new Sigur Rós album -Valtari (roller)- coming out at the end of May, it’s going to be beautiful. Moreover, it signals a return to the clean elegance, minimalist beauty, and deceitful simplicity that characterized “( )” and “Àgætis Byrjun”.

So,yeah, you could say that like everyone else, I’m terribly excited to hear more.

FYI: Ekki múkk translates to “no seagull”, and of course, sigur rós means “victory rose”.

‘Lazuli’ - Beach House

They went and did it again… Hypnotic like a halo of sunrays beaming through your lover’s hair. Warm like a hand tenderly touching your face. It thumps exitedly like a contented heart. In a word: Precious. Like you, I’m seriously looking forward to listening to this album repeatedly… to let it embrace me and hold me gently.

M3: Inconstant Star Cluster

Time elapsed in the animation is actually just one night. The Universe(s) may be indifferent, as Don Draper has boldly postulated, but that doesn’t make it any less awe-inspiring. Read the article here.

Blouse - “Ghost Dream”

Dir: Gusti Fink, Helmut Ash Kaway, Prod: $ANDBOXXX

Remember when the medium of the music video was in its nascent stages? Like a wittle baby 8-bit caterpillar wiggling about all pixelated, angular, and full of wonder. Then, it was a rigid formulaic pupa for a while… Then, it was a fluttering butterfly that mimicked a short film: bloated budget, movie stars, future film directors, and all. Then, shortly thereafter, it died. The memory of that caterpillar and all its imagination and promise lives in the minds of all of those who were inspired by it. This video for Ghost Dream exemplifies that. The echoing synths and the retro-3D computer animations conspire to make this a requiem for a music video. Did I mention it has a glazed donut hurtling through space? Yeah, I can totally get behind that.

If you’re digging Blouse, like I am, check out the Tiny Mixtapes Review.  Then, go tho their tumblr. Then, get the album from my label crush, Brooklyn’s Captured Tracks.

I’m being a big fat bossy pants today, aren’t I?

This Is My Jam: “Eleven Twenty” - Caves

I give you the Jam I’m sharing this week, in the hopes that I will infect you with this like music weevils crawling into your ear, and proceeding to do some Design*Sponge-inspired cochlear nesting. They ain’t going anywhere, cos guess what: It’s rent-controlled up in the middle and inner ear regions. I speak from personal experience: Even when my headphones are off, it still echoes in my head. Them weevils ain’t going anywhere soon, except, maybe to brunch with friends next weekend.

Laissez les bons temps jadis rouler (Let the good times of yore roll)

This neat selection of old photos by the folks at the über cool rag Paper Mag proves that Mardi Gras celebrations used to be fairly interesting affairs. It also deepens my suspicion that if you can imagine it, it has been done already. Also, the second photo apparently took place in Nazi Germany.

Storefront Windows at Neat Stuff in Philadelphia

Basically, this quirky (understatement) establishment has the best window display I have ever done witnessed with mine own two eyes. If you did this, you are my idol; and you inspire me to keep on being myself because I’m not alone in this crazy world. Yep, I got ALL that from this.
